Are you struggling to find happiness and joy?

Do you feel overwhelmed, or that life is out of control?

iStock_000000930817_Adults2Do you find it is hard to get out of bed some days, or that racing thoughts keep you from getting your work done?

Are you unsatisfied in your relationships, constantly anxious, stressed, or worried?

Whether you have experienced a loss, or a significant transition such as a divorce or career change, individual therapy can help. If you find that stress and pressure has you questioning your confidence, purpose and direction in life, individual therapy can help you resolve your doubts, and get back on track.

Perhaps you are facing the tensions of financial, relationship or family conflict. These pressures are real, and they can bring up overwhelming feelings, stress and confusion.

Feeling unhappy, upset, or burnt out from time to time is normal. However, if a few days turns into a few weeks, it’s wise to seek professional help so you can feel better and turn things around before they take a turn for the worse. I find that helping people tolerate and resolve the feelings that arise during times of uncertainty and uneasiness allows them to think more clearly, feel better about themselves, and make better choices in life.
I see adults for therapy as parents, couples and individually.

Tools for Change

Many adults have long-standing emotional distress that they have accepted as their fate. Symptoms can range from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, ADHD, anger, dysfunctional relationships and substance abuse. I have a variety of tools to help you move through the emotional issues underlying these problems. I see people for short-term assistance in handling a crisis and that’s all some people need. Other clients choose to continue therapy to work through deeper issues, and gain further support and insight.

People often have intense feelings of guilt, low self-worth, or doubt that are hard to make sense of – “I feel bad – but I have no idea why, or what to do about it.”
It may seem that no one else could possibly understand how you feel. By working with an experienced therapist, insights can flow and stress can be resolved – making it easier to be happy with yourself, your relationships, and at work.

Counseling for Parents

As part of working with children I often see their parents. Sometimes this is just part of helping the child. Being a parent can bring up a variety of emotional issues. Many times parents experience speaking to their children in a voice that is eerily reminiscent of their own childhood. Being a parent has always been a challenge, but I think it is increasingly difficult today given all the challenges to which children are exposed. Resolving issues of guilt and self-doubt, which inevitably arise, is a process which is helpful both to the parent and to their children.

Grief, Loss, Separation

As adults we are inevitably faced with grief and loss. Friends and parents die. Relationships and jobs end. Sometimes life can be difficult to accept. Feelings of grief are not pathological, but really part of life. We all need to learn to accept and resolve them. I can help. Therapy can help relieve the pain and make the process more rapid.

Isolation and depression are common in our society. You may have lots of friends and acquaintances, be in a relationship and have people who love you, and still have these feelings. Low self-esteem and a lack of excitement about life can contribute to a whole host of dysfunctional behaviors – from choosing bad relationships to additions with food, drugs or alcohol and even to thoughts of suicide. Therapy can be extremely helpful. Many times I find people don’t realize that they can find joy in life until they have confronted the issues that have been keeping them stuck. The tools I bring can make this a more rapid and easier process than you might imagine.

Professional Goals and Challenges

I have been able to help clients with the challenges of their professional life. Setting appropriate goals, having a vision of your own possibilities, developing self management skills, and being able to handle the stresses of work life are all important to moving ahead in your career. I bring extensive experience as a management consultant. Therapy can go beyond resolving old issues to helping you achieve high-level performance in work and life.

Adult ADD and ADHD

Do you have trouble staying on task? ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are major issues in many people’s lives. While drugs may help, they are not without side effects and risks. In my work with many clients, many of these issues can be resolved by handling the underlying feelings.

Anger Management

Anger is a normal emotion, but if you have bouts of rage or live with constant feelings of anger and resentment, therapy can help you find peace. You may not realize you have anger issues until you are in a crisis. Outbursts can cost you your relationship, your job and possibly your freedom. Hidden anger can lead to verbal or physical violence. I have extensive experience in this area having run domestic violence groups for several years. There is help for you.

You may be ready for change, but still have questions or concerns about individual therapy…

I’ve heard that individual therapy can be expensive and take a long time.

Therapy is an investment in yourself, your family, your relationships and your work life. Like anything else of value, it does require a time and financial commitment. However, when you make the commitment to work through challenges, you create the opportunity to feel better sooner as well as to shift difficult patterns, and achieve more success in all aspects of your life. An investment in yourself now can create immediate relief and long-term positive change. Through individual counseling, you can improve the quality of your relationships, experience more at work, and cultivate the confidence and self-love needed for sustainable happiness and success.

I’m afraid that I’ll experience more anxiety or feelings of doubt if I start talking about all that’s not going well in my life.

Talking about your experience will not make anything worse. Usually in fact, people feel much better! By expressing your thoughts and feelings you can better understand and explore stuck areas – resulting in decreased stress, greater insight, and even a breakthrough. I’ll provide you with a safe space where you can talk and get support free of judgment. I’ll offer you practical, compassionate feedback, effective tools for stress relief, as well as the ability to explore your situation from a broader perspective.

I’m worried that through individual counseling I’ll discover that something is really wrong with me and that I’ll lose control of my emotions and meltdown.

If you’re going through a lot and feeling down and frightened right now, that’s okay. We all go through times in life when our emotions and life situation feel overwhelming. The good news is that talking through big emotions with a skilled therapist can provide you with the relief you’re seeking. When we talk through our issues, they lose their power and our lives feel more manageable. And, by reaching out for help you’re taking the first big step toward feeling better and gaining control of your life.
